This is the beginning of the Mythical Folk History of the Life & Times of James Spader. It is not the beginning in the sense of chronological time, but it is a beginning nonetheless. We will start here and now, because this present moment is all we have.
It is every fan’s hope that the subject of their admiration bears some similarity to the characters that they have performed. If this were true, then James Spader would indeed be an enthralling man to study and observe. He has been by turns menacing, dark, serious, sharp of wit and tongue, lighthearted, intelligent, erotic, mischievous, ebullient, cynical, optimistic, omniscient, kind hearted, cold, violent, passionate, logical, irrational, thoughtful and impetuous. He has been a great many things but he is also so much more.
James Spader is what livestock smell before a tsunami. He's the feeling dogs use to align themselves with the earth’s magnetic poles before bowel movements. He's the sound strawberries make when they breathe. He is the swirling cacophony of color seen by the Oracles at Delphi in the midst of a prophetic trance. He is, in short, too much for one blog post to contain, and so I leave you now with the sure knowledge that this is only the beginning and the journey that we are about to embark on shall be both long and arduous. But we’ll learn a great many things and, in the end, I am certain we shall look back on it all and agree that it was worth the effort.
